Mukhtar Shehu Shagari, a former Minister of Water Resources and ex-Deputy Governor of Sokoto State, has formally announced his departure from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and his entry into the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Sokoto state.
After over 25 years of being a staunch member of the PDP, Shagari’s move to the APC has been confirmed by the party’s state secretary, Abubakar Yabo.
Shagari, who had served as a minister during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, received his APC membership card, signifying his official registration with the ruling party.

Shagari’s decision to switch parties has been attributed to perceived discrepancies and treatment by the national PDP leadership. His defection has sparked discussions across the state, with speculations suggesting that his political ideology might have previously tied him to the PDP.
In reaction to Shagari’s departure, the Sokoto state PDP leadership expressed disappointment, characterizing his move as an act of betrayal. They emphasized his six-year tenure as a minister and noted that he left the party without his followers.

The party’s publicity secretary, Hassan Sanyinnawal, stated that Shagari’s defection would not weaken the PDP or alter the state party structures.
He maintained that the PDP remains a steadfast opposition force in the state, with its representatives at both state and national assemblies continuing to represent the people of Sokoto state.
Shagari’s membership with the APC has been documented as “All Progressives Congress APC Justice, peace and Unity.
Registration form, ‘Mukhtar Shehu Shagari (CFR) SOKO/SGR/014/26001’ dated May 27, 2023.” His switch from the PDP to the APC signifies a shift in his political allegiance and a change in the dynamics of political affiliations in Sokoto state.
