Pope Francis Urges Diplomatic Resolution to Niger’s Political Crisis
Pope Francis has appealed for a diplomatic resolution to the ongoing political crisis in Niger, advocating for peace in the aftermath of the June 26 coup d’état that led to the removal of democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum.
The Pope conveyed his intentions to pray for tranquility in the West African nation, which has been grappling with instability following the coup.

In response to the crisis, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has implemented sanctions and indicated the possibility of military intervention to restore the deposed leader if the coup organizers do not take steps to reinstate him.
During his address to the congregation in St. Peter’s Square after the Angelus prayer on Sunday, the eighty-six-year-old pontiff expressed his concern about the unfolding events in Niger. He aligned himself with the bishops’ plea for peace in the nation and stability within the Sahel region.

The Pope’s message underscored his belief in the power of collective prayer and international cooperation to facilitate a swift and peaceful resolution. He stated, “I join with prayer the efforts of the international community to find a peaceful solution as soon as possible for the good of everyone.”
