Nigerian Youths Announce Date To Do The Unthinkable To INEC Chairman Mahmoud Yakubu for Allegedly Rigging Presidential Election
Nigerian youths have announced a national prayer day slated for February 25, 2024, to voice their discontent and frustration against Prof Mahmoud Yakubu, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The prayer, titled “Curse Be Unto Mahmoud Yakubu,” aims to condemn the alleged rigging of the 2023 presidential election.
According to the youths, Yakubu’s involvement in what they term a “cash-and-carry” election is believed to be the root cause of the current hardships faced by Nigerians due to the perceived anti-people’s policies of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
#RevolutionNow activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Omoyele Sowore, took to X (formerly Twitter) to share a poster promoting the prayer event.
Sowore accuses the INEC chairman of selling the presidential election to the highest bidder and calls on individuals from diverse religious backgrounds to unite in cursing Yakubu for his alleged role in bringing President Tinubu to power.
However, Sowore, while acknowledging the frustration among the youths, dismissed the effectiveness of such curses, labeling them a “waste of time.” Instead, he urged the disheartened generation to channel their energy towards impactful actions that could lead to meaningful change.
In a tweet, Sowore stated, “Curses on @inecnigeria Chairman won’t and don’t work, don’t waste your time as ‘youths’ embarking on these embarrassing escapades of actions that have zero impact. If you want to change your situation, GIDDY UP, #TaKEITBACK! Engage in mass action! #RevolutionNow.”

As the nation grapples with political tensions and economic challenges, the upcoming prayer day raises questions about the diverse methods Nigerians are employing to express their dissatisfaction and advocate for change in the country.
