Wike told to resign immediately as cases of kidnappings and terror attacks escalate in Abuja

"However, instead of addressing these issues, the FCT minister is acting as a Co-Governor to the sitting Governor of Rivers state - Fubara. A situation where the governor hosts a dinner on Saturday and Wike does his on Sunday, or a democratically elected Governor holds a rally on Monday and Wike in competing with the governor holds his own rally on Tuesday is not acceptable or sustainable for governance."

Wike told to resign immediately as cases of kidnappings and terror attacks escalate in Abuja

In a wave of growing discontent, Nigerians are demanding the immediate resignation of the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, as cases of kidnappings and terror attacks escalate in Abuja.

Despite the conclusion of national elections, Wike, currently in a seeming perpetual campaign mode, has come under severe criticism for neglecting his duties as the Minister.

Social media platforms are flooded with calls for his removal, accusing him of prioritizing personal interests over the security of the nation’s capital.

Dr. Dipo Awojide, a prominent human capital strategist, took to his verified X account to express his concerns, urging Wike to cut short his frequent trips to Port Harcourt and address the alarming rise in kidnapping incidents in Abuja.

Dr. Dipo Awojide wrote: “The Minister of FCT should cut short his trip from Rivers and return to Abuja. The President should be meeting with security chiefs tomorrow. The frequency of these kidnapping and killings is outrageous.”

Awojide emphasized the urgent need for the President to meet with security chiefs to tackle the escalating crisis.

Awojide added: “Wike should stay at his duty post in Abuja, as should other Ministers. They cannot be flying to their state almost every weekend like they are on holiday. There is serious work to be done in every sector and it should be done round the clock, not part-time.”

Adding to the chorus of discontent, Sodiq Tade lamented the deteriorating security situation in Abuja, criticizing Wike for his absence and engagement in activities unrelated to his ministerial responsibilities.

Sodiq Tade wrote: “Insecurity has increased in the capital city in the last few months, and the man appointed to be the city coordinator is always in Rivers State dancing or moving from one Palace to another. This is really sad. I hope they remove him and bring in someone more serious. It is terrible. He wants to be in the news forever. You served 8 years already. Focus on your primary assignment. If you are not interested, resign and go back to your local politics.

Another concerned citizen, Omotayo Williams, pointed out Wike’s perceived incompetence, stating that the Minister’s extended stays in Rivers State are unacceptable.

Williams highlighted the gravity of the situation by referencing the indefinite strike declared by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) FCT Wing, holding Wike responsible for potential risks faced by school children.

Williams expressed frustration at Wike’s dual role, acting as both FCT Minister and a third term governor of Rivers State.

Williams wrote: “It has become obvious that Wike is incompetent and unable to manage the affairs of the FCT. The level of kidnapping we are witnessing in Abuja under the current administration is unprecedented.”

“Earlier today also, the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) FCT Wing directed all primary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory to embark on an indefinite strike. The failure of Wike to resolve this strike issue will lead to our children sitting at home. Even if they decide to go to school, they are at risk of being kidnapped.”

“However, instead of addressing these issues, the FCT minister is acting as a Co-Governor to the sitting Governor of Rivers state – Fubara. A situation where the governor hosts a dinner on Saturday and Wike does his on Sunday, or a democratically elected Governor holds a rally on Monday and Wike in competing with the governor holds his own rally on Tuesday is not acceptable or sustainable for governance.”

“An FCT minister spending a significant number of his days in Rivers is not acceptable. It is high time Wike decides what he wants – Does he want to be an FCT minister or a local politician playing opposition to the man with the “Red biro.” Two people cannot use one “red biro.”

“If he continues to fail the people of Abuja, then he should be immediately sacked from office. Or he can honorably resign to play the Rivers politics he can’t leave behind after 8 years in power. If he appears to be a “garbage” to the current regime, then he needs to be carefully managed and eventually disposed of.”
