…Peterside, Lulu-Briggs fault impeachment

 

With the massive unsolicited statewide support for Siminalayi Fubara, the Governor of Rivers State after a failed plot to impeach him on Monday, the lawmakers loyal to Nyesom Wike, who spearheaded the plot have started restrategizing in order to reclaim their positions following the reordering of things.

With the failed plot, a new speaker, Hon.Eddison Ehie emerged, while Hon. Martins Amaeawhule, the former Speaker and two-term Majority Leader under Wike’s administration, and a few principal officers in the House lost their positions.

As the impeachment plot fades into oblivion, Wike’s camp has attracted condemnation from political leaders across party lines in a state renowned for strong opposition politics.

Outside Rivers, the interest of the Ijaws in other parts of the Niger Delta, which umbrella body, the Ijaw National Congress (INC) has voiced out in support for Fubara, as well as the voice of elder statesman, Chief Edwin Clark has forced Wike’s camp to backtrack.

 

Also, a Hgh Court of Rivers State at Isiokpo, today the 1st day of November, 2023 has issued an interim order restraining the Rivers State House of Assembly, The Speaker of the House, Deputy Speaker, Clerk of the House & the Chief Judge of the State from impeaching Fubara.

 

The failed impeachment, which initially appeared achievable, has caused outrage among politicians from different parties, women and youth groups, elders, and traditional rulers.

One of the political heavyweights who have spoken against the impeachment, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who contested the governorship election in 2015, has pointed out that the governor has not committed any offense to merit removal.

 

Peterside said: “Nothing in the political landscape has shown that the Executive Governor has compromised the State’s interest or put our State in a severe security quagmire.”

 

Also, Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs, the governorship candidate of the Accord Party (AP) in the last election, has appealed to politicians to consider the state’s interest ahead of theirs.

“I call on the leadership of the Rivers State House of Assembly to put the interests of the state and its constituents uppermost during these very trying times. They should be guided by the pursuit of the common good.

 

“The legislative chambers shouldn’t be a platform for destabilization but a place to ensure that justice is pursued and constitutional principles are adhered to. I call on all Rivers people to pray for the state and its leaders and desist from activities that could further escalate the troubling political situation.”

 

Also, the member representing Bonny Constituency, Hon. Victor Oko Jumbo, who is in the camp of Ehie, and over 23 lawmakers that foiled the planned impeachment, says that Fubara will successfully complete his tenure irrespective of moves by the pro-Wike lawmakers to truncate it.

The lawmakers, who spoke to youths backing the governor, said: “We will be the custodian of democracy as your representatives. We will make sure that proceedings of the 10then Assembly are done transparently and in accordance with the law”.
