Former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, has sparked controversy after ordering members of the State House of Assembly to unquestioningly approve all proposals brought before them by Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo.

In a video circulating online, Bello was seen addressing a group of lawmakers, instructing them to “sit on the floor” and cooperate fully with the Speaker and other principal officers of the Assembly to ensure that Ododo’s administration runs smoothly.

“Thank you. Sit down. So, as we are going in there now, go and cooperate with the Speaker and other members of the House of Assembly of Kogi State. Be part of those that will support Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo. I think you see my point. In everything that comes to the Assembly. Everything,” Bello said.

The directive has drawn mixed reactions, with critics accusing the former governor of undermining the principles of democracy and legislative independence.

Governor Ododo, who succeeded Bello in January 2024, is seen as his political protégé. Analysts believe the former governor’s influence over the state’s political structure remains strong, raising concerns about checks and balances in governance.
