‘Wike Has Destroyed Abuja, the Town Is Sinking and Flooded’ — Lawyer, Nigerians Call Out FCT Minister as Flood Takes Over City

Activist and lawyer Deji Adeyanju has criticised Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike over the flooding that affected several parts of Abuja following heavy rainfall.

Adeyanju accused the FCT administration of poor urban planning and alleged encroachment on canals and waterways, arguing that such developments may have contributed to the flooding.

The lawyer made the remarks in a Facebook post after heavy rainfall left parts of the nation’s capital, including Maitama, flooded.

“Wike has destroyed Abuja. The town is stinking and flooded. I have never seen this kind of complete lunacy and greed before,” Adeyanju wrote.

He further alleged that the flooding was linked to the allocation of waterways and canals for development.

“How do you allocate canals and waterways to politicians to build estates on it?” he asked.

Adeyanju’s criticism has since triggered mixed reactions on social media, with some Nigerians agreeing with his concerns about Abuja’s drainage system and urban development, while others accused him of using the flooding to attack Wike.

One social media user, Remo Uche, described Adeyanju’s comment as “funny and desperate.”

Another user, Nnadi Hope, accused the activist of constantly seeking media attention, while Tenny N Tenny argued that heavy rainfall and flooding occur in cities around the world.

Other commenters, however, appeared to support Adeyanju’s concerns, particularly regarding Abuja’s drainage infrastructure and development around waterways.

The reactions come as residents continue to raise concerns about the impact of heavy rainfall and flooding on roads, homes and other infrastructure across parts of the FCT.

Adeyanju’s comments have also renewed debate over urban planning, drainage systems and the enforcement of regulations governing construction around waterways in Abuja.
