Staff and students of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) are celebrating a significant academic milestone following the release of the latest accreditation results by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

The Vice Chancellor, Francisca Bassey, announced the outcome on Thursday, April 23, 2026, during an emergency Senate meeting held at the university’s Calabar campus. She revealed that all programmes presented for accreditation in November and December 2025 secured full accreditation, with the exception of one programme, which received interim status.

Among the programmes granted full accreditation are Human Kinetics and Health Education, Urban and Regional Planning, Economics, Peace and Conflict Studies, Sociology, Banking and Finance, Entrepreneurship Studies, Marketing, Forestry and Wildlife, Broadcasting, Journalism and Media Studies, Information Systems, Software Engineering, Animal and Environmental Biology, Industrial Chemistry, and Plant Science Biology. However, the Department of Childhood Education was awarded Interim Accreditation.

Providing insight into the development, Professor Bassey noted that some of the now-accredited programmes had previously struggled to meet regulatory standards. She explained that the Department of Urban and Regional Planning had twice failed accreditation exercises, preventing it from admitting new students, while Forestry and Wildlife had also experienced similar setbacks.

She emphasized that many of the accredited courses are relatively new, making the achievement even more noteworthy for the institution.

Highlighting exceptional performances, the Vice Chancellor disclosed that Plant Science Biology recorded the highest score at 93.7 percent, followed by Animal and Environmental Biology with 92.9 percent, and Entrepreneurship Studies with 91.2 percent.

Professor Bassey commended the Heads of Departments and academic staff for their dedication, singling out Samuel Osim, Head of the Department of Plant Science Biology, for special recognition due to his department’s outstanding performance. In appreciation, she pledged to upgrade the department’s laboratory facilities, refurbish the Head of Department’s office, and provide a personal laptop for Dr. Osim.

Describing the outcome as a major institutional achievement, the Vice Chancellor reaffirmed the university’s commitment to maintaining high academic standards and pursuing continuous improvement.

The UNICROSS community has welcomed the development as a strong step forward, marking another milestone under Professor Bassey’s leadership.
