Transforming Healthcare: Cross River State Hosts NMCN Examiners’ Workshop
Cross River State had the privilege of hosting the helmsman of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN), Alhaji Dr. Ndagi Alhassan, during the just concluded Examiners workshop.
The Special Assistant to the Governor Nursing, Mr Coco Bassey Esu, thanked the Registrar for choosing the State as the host for the South South 2025 Nursing and Midwifery Council Examiners’ Workshop. The five-day workshop, themed “Competency-Based Assessment: A Foundation for Effective Nursing and Midwifery Education and Practice,” brought together participants from the relevant states.

The workshop was declared open by the Hon. Commissioner for Health Dr Henry Ayuk who represented the Governor Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu while Prof. Margaret Opia, the Chairman Governing Council of Cross River State College of Nursing Sciences, Itigidi, delivered the key note address.
At a grand dinner night marking the end of the workshop, Mr. Coco-Bassey Esu lauded the Registrar’s affection for the state. He highlighted the Governor Apostle Sen. Prince Bassey Otu’s love and unwavering support for the nursing profession. He noted that the Governor inherited four colleges transitioning from schools of nursing to collegiate and ensured the process was completed successfully. Mr Coco-Bassey also stated that His Excellency, the Governor, has appointed two nurses to key roles: Mrs. Uduak Spencer as Special Adviser and myself as Special Assistant on Nursing, with a focus on advancing the nursing profession.
The Special Assistant advocated for the NMCN’s continued support for Cross River State, suggesting the introduction of more programs to strengthen the healthcare system.

In his response, the CEO/Registrar of NMCN Alhaji Dr. Ndagi emphasized the importance of shared commitment and collaboration in maintaining excellence in nursing education and practice. He highlighted the council’s assessment system through accreditation aimed at ensuring quality, competency, and public trust.
One of the team menber and Director of Finance, Mr. Daniel Tokunbo, praised the Governor for his hospitality and expressed appreciation for the warm reception accorded the team since on arrival. He called for unity amongst stakeholders to enhance the nursing profession.
In her vote of thanks, the Director of Nursing Services, Mrs. Roseline Obojor commended the NMCN for the choice of Cross River State and highlighted the workshop’s impact on shaping the profession.

The grand dinner night was attended by members of the NMCN, zonal coordinator, provosts of colleges, Nigerian Association of Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) officials, and other stakeholders in the nursing profession.
