Tinubu Increases Fuel Price Again Days After Wike Said ‘Nigerians Claiming They’re Suffering’

The administration of President Bola Tinubu has announced yet another increase in the price of petroleum, intensifying the economic burden for Nigerians.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) displayed new pump prices on Tuesday, with stations in Lagos and Abuja reflecting rates of N1,025 and N1,060 per liter, respectively.

The latest hike comes as Nigerians grapple with the impact of rising fuel prices on their daily lives, facing an escalating cost of living that shows little sign of relief.

This price adjustment follows an initial hike shortly after President Tinubu’s administration took office on May 29, 2023. With the elimination of the fuel subsidy, which had been in place to cushion costs for consumers, prices have surged from N145 to over N1,000, sparking criticism and frustration from citizens. Many have dubbed Tinubu “T-Pain” in reference to the economic hardship they say his policies have inflicted.

In October, the NNPCL had pegged petrol prices at N1,030 per liter in Abuja and N998 in Lagos, with independent filling stations charging even higher rates, up to N1,200 in some cases.

Despite these adjustments, the latest increase represents a new high, underscoring the ongoing struggles for Nigerians who face rising prices across other essentials, including food and transportation.

Recently, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, downplayed complaints of hardship, calling out Nigerians who claimed they were suffering.

This remark, however, has only added to frustrations as many citizens feel the impacts of surging prices in nearly every aspectof their lives.
