His remarks followed a recent high-profile meeting with Nasir El-Rufai, a prominent figure in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), and other political stakeholders.

Gabam defended the meeting, stating it was part of the SDP’s broader strategy to assess Nigeria’s political and economic climate.

“Why the Worry About El-Rufai?”

Gabam dismissed criticism of the meeting, questioning the uproar surrounding their engagement with El-Rufai.

“Why the dust about Malam Nasir El-Rufai? They say he is not significant, he’s nothing. Why the worry about El-Rufai? Why the worry about Segun Sowunmi? If they are important, why won’t the government give them the relevant roles they need to play to enhance the efficiency of the government?” he asked.

He clarified that the meeting aimed to position the SDP as a credible opposition force by learning from the APC’s playbook when it unseated the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2015.

Challenges to Tinubu’s Leadership

Gabam criticized President Tinubu’s cabinet, describing it as lacking the capacity to deliver on the president’s vision for the country. He highlighted Nigeria’s worsening economic conditions, arguing that no president has historically survived re-election after two years of significant public dissatisfaction.

“No president that was elected to serve four years and has issues in two years can survive. Jonathan’s opposition started within two years – he lost the election,” he said.

Drawing parallels with former President Goodluck Jonathan, who faced mounting opposition early in his tenure, Gabam suggested that Tinubu may encounter similar challenges unless his administration improves governance and addresses public grievances.

Strategic Realignment for 2027

The SDP chairman explained that his party is working to re-strategize and build alliances ahead of the 2027 elections. He emphasized the importance of engaging with various political actors to foster a “better Nigeria.”

“It’s the same things APC did when PDP was misbehaving; they re-organized, regrouped, and relaunched a merger that led to the defeat of the PDP,” Gabam noted.

While asserting the SDP’s role as a constructive opposition, Gabam dismissed accusations of undermining Tinubu’s administration, stating that their actions were aimed at holding the government accountable and preparing for the future.

Implications for 2027

Gabam’s statements underscore the mounting challenges facing Tinubu’s administration as it navigates economic hardships and growing public discontent. With opposition parties like the SDP seeking to consolidate their influence, the political landscape ahead of the next election could become increasingly competitive.
