Courtroom in Shock as Nnamdi Kanu Questions Judge on Nigeria’s History During Court Session.
Tension filled the Federal High Court in Abuja today when the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, engaged the presiding judge in a brief but heated exchange that momentarily disrupted proceedings.
News Week Nigeria gathered that the exchange began when Kanu asked a series of questions that took the courtroom by surprise.

According to eyewitnesses, including this reporter, Kanu asked:
“My Lord, let’s be honest — how old is Nigeria?”
The Chief Judge reportedly replied that Nigeria was about 65 years old, prompting Kanu to continue:

“How old is your grandfather?”
When the judge answered, “He’s 98 years old,” Kanu pressed further:
“So, are you saying your grandfather is older than your country? Before your grandfather was born, what was the name of Nigeria?”

At that point, proceedings were said to have been paused. The judge left the bench briefly, and the session was later adjourned to a new date yet to be confirmed by the court registrar.
Court security personnel immediately restored order as murmurs spread through the gallery. Some lawyers present reportedly described the moment as “unprecedented” in a federal courtroom.
Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has been facing trial on multiple charges since 2021. His defence team continues to contest the legality of his arrest and the charges brought against him.
The courtroom incident adds another dramatic twist to one of Nigeria’s most closely watched cases.
