Stampedes: Nigerians Dying to Eat Food Under Tinubu’s Govt – Peter Obi Cries Out
Peter Obi Expresses Grief Over Fatal Stampedes Amid Food Shortages in Nigeria.
Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has voiced profound sorrow following a series of fatal stampedes in parts of Nigeria, as citizens struggle to access food amid worsening economic conditions.
The incidents, which occurred in Ibadan, Anambra, and the Federal Capital Territory, left dozens dead as people scrambled to obtain food items distributed as palliatives to alleviate hunger.
“I am deeply saddened and distressed by the tragic loss of lives in desperate searches for food,” Mr Obi said in a statement.
Highlighting the dire state of the economy, he described the tragedies as reflective of Nigeria’s systemic challenges. “These tragedies reflect the systemic failures that plague our society.
The desperate quest for survival in these harsh economic times has driven our people to extremes in their search for food, often at the cost of their lives,” he remarked.
Mr Obi also criticised the government for its inability to address hunger, questioning how a resource-rich nation could fail to meet the basic needs of its citizens.
How do we explain that in a nation blessed with abundant resources, our people are dying of hunger in such numbers? How is it possible that we cannot feed our citizens despite the vast, fertile lands our nation is endowed with? My heart bleeds,” he added.
The stampedes have underscored growing concerns over the nation’s economic challenges, as food prices continue to soar and poverty deepens under the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
