Presidency Warns Edo Governor, Others To Stop 2027 Campaign for Tinubu

The Presidency has issued a stern warning to individuals and political figures, including Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, over premature campaigns for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.

The caution comes in the wake of a growing number of billboards and public displays promoting the President and Vice President Kashim Shettima across major cities, including Abuja and Kano.

In a statement released on Sunday and signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency disavowed any connection to the 2027 campaign efforts, labelling them as unauthorized and in violation of Nigeria’s electoral laws.

“We urgently call on individuals and groups funding this 2027 political campaign through the ongoing deployment of materials on billboards nationwide to cease immediately,” the statement read.

Tinubu’s 2027 Campaign Billboards

Titled “Presidency Disclaims 2027 Campaign Billboards Nationwide,” the statement emphasized that the President and his deputy remain focused on governance and nation-building, not electoral politics.

Onanuga stressed that Tinubu and Shettima “do not support any campaign that breaches the laws of the land,” adding that such premature political activities could undermine the integrity of the electoral process and create unfair advantages.

“While President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima greatly appreciate their teeming and loyal supporters across the country for their enthusiasm and continuing support, the two leaders do not support any campaign that breaches the laws of the land.”

The Presidency argued that premature campaigning can undermine the integrity of the electoral process and create unfair advantages.

He added, “As law-abiding leaders, President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima do not support any action that undermines our institutions and the electoral process.”

INEC Electoral Guidelines

Until the Independent National Electoral Commission sets the timetable for the 2027 elections, Onanuga cautioned that the President has not endorsed or authorised anyone or any group to mount a 2027 campaign for him through any media channel—be it Out-of-Home, print, digital, radio, or television.

It urged supporters of the administration to cease immediately, adding that “President Tinubu and his deputy are fully committed to delivering the ongoing task of nation-building they have set for themselves.”

This commitment is evident in their focus on economic revitalisation, human capital development, infrastructural renewal, social investment, and national security, said Onanuga.

“When INEC signals that the processes for the 2027 elections can start, President Tinubu will duly inform Nigerians of his plans,” the statement concluded.

2027: Edo Governor, Okpebholo, Kickstarts Campaign for Tinubu’s Re-election in Benin

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has said he had kick-started the campaign for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.

The governor disclosed this when he received another member of the Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA), who had defected from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

The defector and member House Committee on Budget and Appropriation, Kaycee Osamwonyi, represents Uhunmwonde State Constituency.

The lawmaker had earlier been received into the party by the Edo Acting Chairman of APC, Jarrett Tenebe, who later presented him to the governor at the Government House, Benin City.

Speaking, Okpebholo commended Osamwonyi and his colleagues, who decided to join the APC, assuring them that his administration would create a conducive atmosphere for all of them to operate and collaborate to develop the state.

He noted that his administration had embarked on developmental strides in all sectors of the Edo economy and would make life better for Edo people.

“We congratulate you for returning home. Your coming is a plus for the party as we have five of you who have joined, and you have made our party stronger.

“A lot of people from other political parties are ready to join our party, and soon there will be a carnival. I seek your help to drive development, and together, we will develop the State and make life better for our people.

“Uhunmwonde Local Government is very special to me, and together we can develop the area and open it for growth and development.

“The next election, especially 2027 presidential election, we are ready in Edo State. We have kick-started our own campaigns for the President in 2027.

“We have to mobilise the youths in our state, and you are part of the youth. I promise you that you will enjoy our party as you have chosen to join us,” he said.

Tenebe, who presented Hon. Osamwonyi to the Governor noted that the party was now in full control of the State Assembly as it now has the majority of the members in the house.

Osamwonyi, on his part, said his decision to join the party was a result of the disunity in his former party, the PDP, from the national to unit level, as well as the achievements of Governor Okpebholo in a very short time in office.
