In a landmark ruling that sent shockwaves through the legal and law enforcement communities, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Drambi Vandi, has been sentenced to death by hanging for his involvement in the tragic death of Lagos lawyer, Mrs. Omobolanle Raheem.

Drambi Vandi stood accused of fatally shooting Mrs. Raheem on Christmas Day, December 25, 2022, at Ajah Roundabout on Lekki-Expressway in Lagos State.
The incident, which shook the local community and sparked nationwide outrage, led to Vandi’s arrest and subsequent trial on a count charge of murder. Throughout the proceedings, Vandi maintained his innocence, pleading not guilty to the charge.
The Lagos State Government, represented by the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Moyosore Onigbanjo, led a rigorous prosecution effort.

A total of 11 witnesses were called to testify, including eight police officers, two eyewitnesses, and a pathologist. Among the prosecution’s witnesses was Inspector Matthew Ameh, who had reportedly worked alongside the defendant at the time of the alleged murder.
The prosecution’s case was marked by a multitude of testimonies and evidence, all pointing towards Vandi’s culpability. Despite attempts by Vandi’s defense counsel, Mr. Gbenro Gbadamosi, to have the charges against his client dismissed, the court ultimately dismissed the “no-case” submission on April 3.
Justice Ibironke Harrison, who presided over the case, determined that there was substantial oral and documentary evidence linking the defendant to the alleged crime, warranting further examination.

On May 31, Drambi Vandi took the stand, becoming the sole defense witness. His testimony sought to challenge the prosecution’s case and provide an alternative perspective on the events leading to Mrs. Raheem’s tragic death.
After months of deliberation, the court reached a verdict. On July 13, both parties presented their written arguments, and the court reserved judgment until October 9.
The judgment, delivered on Monday, sentenced Drambi Vandi to death by hanging, marking a significant moment in the pursuit of justice. This case has not only highlighted the importance of accountability within the law enforcement community but also served as a poignant reminder of the legal system’s commitment to upholding the rights and safety of its citizens.
