The Bauchi State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into a fatal clash between farmers and herders in Bursali village, located in Zaki Local Government Area, following the killing of a herder during a confrontation earlier in the week.
In a statement released on Saturday, the command’s spokesperson, Ahmed Wakil, confirmed that the violent incident occurred on Wednesday around 11 a.m.
He disclosed that the conflict erupted after herders from neighbouring Jigawa State reportedly encroached on farmlands in the community, causing significant destruction to crops.

According to Mr Wakil, this alleged encroachment sparked tension among local farmers and community members, ultimately leading to a violent altercation.
“This regrettable act precipitated a confrontation between the herders and community members, during which one herder was killed,” Mr Wakil said.
The police spokesman added that a team of detectives was immediately dispatched to the scene after the incident was reported. Their intervention resulted in the arrest of five suspects who are now in custody as part of ongoing efforts to uncover those responsible for the killing and the broader circumstances surrounding the clash.

He further explained that a preliminary investigation has already begun to determine both the immediate triggers and the underlying causes that fueled the confrontation. This, according to police authorities, will help establish a clear understanding of the events and guide future prevention strategies.
To ensure a more thorough probe, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID). The department is expected to carry out a detailed investigation and make appropriate recommendations once findings are concluded.
The police command also appealed for calm among residents of Bursali village and the wider Zaki LGA, assuring the public that all measures are being taken to prevent further tensions or retaliatory actions.

Mr Wakil emphasized the commitment of the police to maintaining law and order, noting that justice will be served for all parties involved.
The latest incident adds to growing concerns over recurring clashes between farmers and herders in several regions across Nigeria. These conflicts, which often stem from disputes over land use, grazing routes, and crop destruction, have continued to escalate despite efforts by security agencies and local authorities to curtail them.
Communities in Bauchi State—particularly those in agrarian areas—have witnessed similar tensions in recent years as herders migrate in search of pasture, sometimes straying into cultivated farmlands and sparking confrontations. The government at both state and federal levels has repeatedly pledged to address these issues through policies aimed at fostering peaceful coexistence, though lasting solutions remain elusive.
For now, the Bauchi Police Command has assured residents that it is working diligently to unravel the circumstances behind the latest clash and ensure that those responsible for the killing of the herder face the full weight of the law. The command reiterated that maintaining peace in rural communities remains a top priority, urging both farmers and herders to embrace dialogue and lawful means of resolving disputes.
