Peter Obi Under Pressure to Endorse Tinubu’s Re-election as South-East Governors Unite Behind President

Former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is facing growing pressure to endorse President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid as all five governors of Nigeria’s South-East zone rally in support of the current administration.

The call was made public by Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, during a feature interview for a forthcoming State House documentary commemorating President Tinubu’s second year in office.

According to Umahi, regardless of their party affiliations, all five South-East governors are united in their support for Tinubu’s leadership and the federal projects being implemented across the region.

“All the governors in the South East, regardless of party affiliation, are working with the President,” Umahi said, emphasizing a historic level of cooperation. The region’s governors represent a diverse political spectrum: Imo and Ebonyi (APC), Enugu (PDP), Anambra (APGA), and Abia (Labour Party).

Umahi, who served as Governor of Ebonyi State before joining Tinubu’s cabinet, praised the administration’s focus on equitable infrastructure development and national unity. He cited multiple projects in the region—including the completion of federal roads and renewed attention to long-neglected areas—as evidence of the President’s commitment.

“The cries of marginalisation that once dominated South-East discourse have given way to visible action,” he said. “Today, the South East has a Minister of Works for the first time, and we’re seeing real projects—Port Harcourt to Enugu, Enugu to Abakaliki, Enugu to Onitsha, Onitsha to Owerri, and the Second Niger Bridge.”

He further disclosed that the federal government has already paid 30 percent of the cost of the Second Niger Bridge and revealed plans for a regional summit where South-East leaders will formally endorse President Tinubu for a second term in 2027.

“I call on my brother, His Excellency Peter Obi, to join us and work with Mr. President,” Umahi said. “He must be part of this summit where we will collectively endorse President Tinubu for the 2027 election.”

The former governor added that aligning with the President is not about politics, but about ensuring sustained development and fair representation for the South-East.

Meanwhile, Umahi provided key updates on several major infrastructure initiatives. He noted that over 80 percent of Section 1 of the ambitious Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is complete, with tolling expected to begin by December 2025. “It is more than a road—it is an economic corridor and a catalyst for regional growth,” he said.

Other major projects under Tinubu’s administration include the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway, the Trans-Saharan Trade Route, and the Ogun-Ondo-Niger Corridor. Umahi hailed them as “transformative investments” that reflect the President’s vision and dedication to national development.

“President Tinubu is breathing life into long-abandoned national visions, some conceived as far back as the Shehu Shagari era,” Umahi stated.

As the South-East continues to benefit from an unprecedented wave of federal attention, political observers are closely watching Peter Obi’s next move.

His decision could reshape the political dynamics of the region—and possibly the country—ahead of the 2027 elections.
