PDP Members Express Concerns Over Damagum’s Secret Meeting With Tinubu In London As Party Suffers Unending Defeats

The embattled Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ambassador Umar Ilyasu Damagum, has come under fire following allegations of a secret meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in London.

The accusations, raised by former National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, have sparked intense debate over the future of the opposition party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Ologbondiyan, while addressing the G12-Renaissance Group of the PDP in Abuja on Sunday, expressed grave concerns about Damagum’s leadership, which he claimed has led to repeated electoral losses for the party.

Citing the party’s defeat in the recently concluded Ondo State governorship election, he warned that unless the PDP urgently elects a substantive National Chairman from the North Central, as stipulated by Section 47(6) of its 2017 Constitution, the party risks further decline.

“The consistent losses of the PDP in off-season elections are a clear reflection of the dismal performance of Amb. Damagum,” Ologbondiyan stated. “It is reprehensible that the Acting National Chairman is supervising the dishevelling of the party.”

Ologbondiyan further alleged that Damagum lacks the commitment to ensuring the party’s success, pointing to rumors of a clandestine meeting between the PDP chairman and President Tinubu as a possible indicator of ulterior motives. “How can the head of the leading opposition party be accused of meeting secretly with the President of the ruling government, and he has no response to provide?” he questioned.

The former spokesman also highlighted the importance of the upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for November 28, emphasizing that it is critical for the party to replace Damagum with a substantive chairman to restore confidence among members and supporters.

“If a substantive National Chairman is not restored, the PDP may face the same fate in upcoming elections in Anambra, Ekiti, and Osun as it did in Kogi, Imo, and Ondo,” he cautioned.

The allegations have further deepened divisions within the PDP, with some party members calling for a thorough investigation into the claims of Damagum’s meeting with Tinubu. Many believe that if proven true, the incident could undermine the credibility of the party as a viable opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ologbondiyan concluded by urging party leaders to act decisively to rescue the PDP from what he described as the “stranglehold” of Damagum and his alleged backers. “The PDP must be revitalized to perform its role as an effective opposition party,” he said.
