PDP Cries Out As Canadian Court Declared Party Terrorist Organization

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed reports that a Canadian court has designated Nigeria’s two major political parties—the PDP and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)—as terrorist organizations.

Senior government officials, speaking to Daily Trust, described the situation as “highly embarrassing” and confirmed that the Federal Government is expected to respond formally after verifying the ruling.

Timothy Osadolor, a member of the PDP National Executive Committee (NEC), stressed that while foreign courts are entitled to express opinions, such pronouncements should not be mistaken for verified truths.

“The court’s right to express its view doesn’t automatically make it a reflection of reality,” Osadolor said.

He faulted the decision to indict entire political parties rather than identifying specific individuals allegedly linked to terrorism—accusing the court of unfairly grouping the PDP with the APC.

“The PDP is a respected political platform. It’s unfair and misplaced to group us with a party that many believe has damaged Nigeria’s global reputation. The Canadian court overstepped by associating us with terrorism-related accusations,” he added.

Osadolor further interpreted the ruling as a veiled criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s handling of national security, arguing that the administration’s priorities lean more toward self-preservation than combating insurgency.

“This ruling should serve as a serious warning to President Tinubu,” he warned.

Efforts to obtain official reactions from the APC and the Federal Government proved unsuccessful at press time. APC spokespersons Felix Morka and Bala Ibrahim did not respond to inquiries, while the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, had yet to reply to messages.

A senior government source, however, indicated that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would release a statement once the ruling is confirmed.

“Once we verify the court ruling, a formal government response will follow. Each party mentioned will also have the chance to address the allegations,” the source said.
