Panic in Osun as APC Campaign DG’s Nephew Shot Dead Two Days to Governorship Election

Panic has gripped parts of Osun State following the alleged killing of Dele Ayegbo, nephew of Wole Oke, the Director-General of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship campaign council in the state.

The Osun APC alleged that Ayegbo was shot dead on Wednesday night at Esa-Oke in Obokun Local Government Area, just days before the state’s governorship election scheduled for Saturday, August 15.

The allegation was contained in a statement issued on Thursday by the party’s spokesperson, Kola Olabisi.

According to Olabisi, Ayegbo was attacked at a road junction close to his residence in the Idofin area of Esa-Oke by suspected political thugs who reportedly arrived in a vehicle.

The APC spokesperson alleged that two people were shot during the incident, with Ayegbo reportedly dying at the scene, while the second victim was taken to an undisclosed hospital for treatment.

The party condemned the killing and called on the Osun State Police Command to launch an immediate investigation into the incident.

“The killing of the nephew of our campaign Director-General in Esa-Oke is one death too many which must be urgently unravelled by the police in the interest of fairness and justice,” Olabisi said.

The APC further alleged that more than 30 of its members had been killed by political thugs across Osun State since 2022, with the party claiming that Ijesaland accounted for 17 of the alleged deaths.

Olabisi also accused political opponents of using violence to intimidate APC members and supporters ahead of Saturday’s election.

“The purpose is to scare away our members and supporters from exercising their civic responsibility on Saturday,” he alleged.

However, the APC’s claims regarding the identity of those responsible for the attack have not been independently established.

The Osun State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the alleged killing as of the time of filing this report.

The development comes amid heightened political tension in Osun ahead of the August 15 governorship election, with the APC and the Accord Party trading accusations and counter-accusations.

The heightened atmosphere has raised concerns over the safety of voters, party supporters and electoral officials as the state prepares for the off-cycle poll.
