Osun Commissioner Confirms Governor Adeleke’s Planned Defection to APC

There is palpable tension in Osun State as indications grow stronger that Governor Ademola Adeleke is preparing to dump the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to a report by The Punch on Saturday, a senior commissioner in Adeleke’s cabinet has confirmed the governor’s plan to switch parties, although an official declaration is yet to be made.

Despite a public denial issued through his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, speculations about Adeleke’s defection have intensified in recent weeks.

Sources close to the administration say discussions are far advanced, with the governor allegedly informing select members of his cabinet and the Osun State House of Assembly about his decision.

Mr Governor will join the APC, but the official declaration will not be now,” one commissioner, who requested anonymity, disclosed. Two other senior officials in Adeleke’s administration also confirmed the plans, hinting at a calculated delay in the official announcement for political and strategic reasons.

The controversy resurfaced in June after Governor Adeleke, accompanied by his brother, billionaire businessman Adedeji Adeleke, and his nephew, popular musician David Adeleke (a.k.a. Davido), paid a visit to President Bola Tinubu at his Bourdillon residence in Lagos. The images from the visit, shared online by presidential aide Dada Olusegun, sparked fresh concerns within both the PDP and the APC.

While APC leaders have remained silent on the matter, a faction within the party staged a protest on Friday, expressing discontent over the possibility of Adeleke joining their fold. Some members fear the move could disrupt existing power dynamics and internal alliances.

Within the PDP, uncertainty looms. Party loyalists are reportedly rattled by the prospect of losing a sitting governor, especially given the implications for the party’s structure and momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.
