Okowa Trends on X Amid Rumours of Planned Defection to APC

Former Delta State Governor and one-time vice-presidential candidate, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, has become a hot topic on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), following unconfirmed reports that he may be planning to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to sources close to the matter, Okowa and his successor, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, are allegedly in talks to leave the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The potential switch has stirred heated conversations online and within political circles, particularly in Delta State.

Dr. Okowa served as the running mate to Atiku Abubakar in the 2023 presidential election under the PDP banner. The ticket came second, according to results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and notably lost Delta State to the Labour Party — a significant blow in Okowa’s home turf.

Reactions from the APC camp have been mixed. While some view the move as a strategic gain, others warn of internal friction. Political observers point out that if Governor Oborevwori defects, it could spell the end of Senator Ovie Omo-Agege’s 2027 gubernatorial ambitions within the APC. Omo-Agege, who ran unsuccessfully for governor in 2023, is a key player in the party’s Delta structure.

Some analysts have cautioned the APC against welcoming what they describe as a “desperate” switch by the current Delta leadership, suggesting it could destabilize the party’s internal arrangements in the state.

This online newspaper has not been able to independently verify the defection claims. Multiple attempts to reach Okowa for comment have so far been unsuccessful.

Meanwhile, public reaction has been largely critical. Many Nigerians on X have voiced concerns that the potential defection is yet another sign of the country’s weakening political pluralism. “If all major politicians end up in the APC, what happens to democracy?” one user wrote.

As the 2027 elections draw closer, the country’s political landscape is expected to witness more realignments and shifting allegiances, with Delta State now in the spotlight.
