Nigerian politicians splashing billions, while urging citizens to endure economic hardship — USA mission in Nigeria

The U.S. Mission in Nigeria has drawn attention to the growing concerns over government spending amidst economic hardship faced by millions of Nigerians.

In a post shared on its official X account, @USinNigeria, the Mission referenced an investigative report by The Africa Report exposing how some state governors are allegedly spending billions on new government houses and luxury projects.

This comes at a time when citizens are being urged to “endure economic hardship like labor pains,” as inflation, fuel prices, and unemployment continue to bite.

Civic organizations including BudgIT and the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) have also condemned the trend.

“Instead of funding schools, clinics, or agriculture, leaders prioritize buildings they barely use,” BudgIT stated.

CISLAC added, “There is more money, little accountability, and no priority.”

The U.S. Mission highlighted that such alleged fiscal irresponsibility not only fuels inequality but also erodes public trust, calling for greater transparency and accountability in public expenditure.
