Nigeria in Bondage Under Tinubu, Nothing Is Working — Obasanjo Declares

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has described Nigeria as a nation in bondage, weighed down by insecurity, economic collapse, and ethnically-driven leadership under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Obasanjo made the statement on Friday while receiving a delegation from the Southern leadership of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) at his residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

In a stern assessment of the nation’s current trajectory, the elder statesman lamented the deepening crisis across sectors, urging Nigerians to remain alert and prayerful.

“We are in bondage. Let us keep watching the situation, but more importantly, let us pray that God delivers us,” Obasanjo said.

He emphasized the need for a leader who embodies national unity and not one captured by ethnic, religious, or sectional allegiances.

“We’ve had Fulani Nigerian presidents, Hausa Nigerian presidents, Yoruba Nigerian presidents… but we’ve yet to have a true Nigerian president, one for all, not just their tribe. Until we do, our problems will remain,” the former president said pointedly.

Obasanjo, who governed Nigeria both as a military head of state and later as a civilian president, reiterated his non-affiliation with any political party.

I belong to no party. Nigeria is my political party. I only care about the country’s progress,” he stated.

The former leader expressed deep concern over the state of the nation’s leadership, accusing many politicians of prioritizing personal gain over national interest.

We have few genuine nationalists among politicians today. Most are in it for themselves. Nigeria has disappointed not only Africa but the entire world,” he added.

He called on citizens to remain engaged in the political process, warning that apathy could lead to the continued enthronement of ineffective and self-serving leaders.
