This declaration has sparked celebrations and discussions across the region, highlighting the shared heritage between the oil-rich state and its Igbo counterparts.
The announcement coincides with a significant development in the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, the apex socio-cultural organization representing the Igbo people. Chief John Azuta Mbata, a former Senator representing Rivers East at the National Assembly, has been elected as the new President-General of the organization. Mbata’s election took place during the Ohanaeze Ndigbo General Assembly meeting at the Old Government Lodge in Enugu.
Mbata succeeds Nze Ozichukwu Chukwu, who had been serving as interim President-General following the tenure of the late Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu of Imo State. The election was a consensus decision, attended by prominent Igbo dignitaries, including the governors of Enugu, Imo, and Anambra states, as well as political figures such as Senators Chris Ngige, Ben Obi, and Victor Umeh.

Alongside Mbata, other key officials were elected to lead the organization. Prince Okey Nwadinobi from Abia State was chosen as the National Deputy President, and Chief Emeka Sibeidu from Anambra State was named Secretary-General. Chidera Anieke from Enugu State, Ezechukwu Ezechi from Imo State, and Okey Ugwu from Ebonyi State were elected National Treasurer, National Publicity Secretary, and National Legal Adviser, respectively.
The recognition of Rivers State as the sixth Igbo State was made known by a post from a media personality known as The General Snow.
Sharing the news on his verified X account, he wrote, “Rivers State is Officially the 6th Igbo State. Congratulations to Us.”
