Makinde Begs Aggrieved PDP Members not to support coalition, despite teaming up with G5 rebellious governors to back Tinubu in 2023

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has appealed to aggrieved members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) not to abandon the party, despite the internal conflicts and his controversial role in the G5 coalition that worked against the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections.

Speaking during the South West Zonal Caucus meeting of the PDP held in Ibadan, Governor Makinde urged party faithful to remain committed to the ideals of unity, progress, and national development, stressing that temporary challenges should not warrant leaving the party.

Recall that during the build-up to the 2023 election, the Wike-led G5, comprising five seating governors, refused to work for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of their party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The group, led by Wike, comprised Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Samuel Ortom of Benue, Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia and Ifeanyi Uguanyi of Enugu State.

The governors’ grievance, predicated on the North-South zoning arrangement, hampered PDP chances as the group insisted that the party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 election should have emerged from the South instead of Atiku, who is a northerner.

The G5 activities contributed to the party’s defeat as Wike and his colleagues openly worked against the PDP and backed Bola Tinubu, a southerner and candidate of the All Progressives Congress.

However, Makinde has urged other opposition politicians that are in the coalition, especially members of the PDP, to return to the Party, likening their alliance as people who abandoned a house due to internal challenges.

“You can’t abandon your house because of a leaking roof,” Governor Makinde declared. He added that the PDP is built on solid foundations, and like any structure, it may face wear and tear. It is the responsibility of all Party members to fix the leaks, strengthen the foundation, and keep the house standing for the people of this country.

Governor Makinde acknowledged the sacrifices of all Party members and leaders and reaffirmed his commitment to working together with other critical stakeholders in the Party towards the success of the PDP in future elections. “Let us fix the roof together and keep this house strong for the future,” Governor Makinde concluded.
