PDP Accuses Tinubu Government of Political Witch-Hunt Over Tambuwal’s Arrest
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Sokoto State has strongly condemned the arrest of former governor and serving senator, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), describing it as a calculated attempt to silence the opposition.
Tambuwal, who governed Sokoto State for two terms and previously served as Speaker of the House of Representatives, was taken into EFCC custody on Monday over allegations of financial misconduct during his time in office.

In a statement signed by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Hassan Sahabi Sanyinnawal, the Sokoto PDP alleged that the move was part of a broader strategy by the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government to intimidate political rivals and suppress dissent against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
“The so-called investigation is nothing more than a fishing expedition, revived from an old phantom case that has failed to produce evidence in the past,” the statement read.
The party claimed that political actors in both Sokoto and Abuja were behind the arrest, seeking to tarnish Tambuwal’s image and pressure him into abandoning his criticism of what it described as the government’s “misrule.”

Maintaining that Tambuwal’s administration was characterised by fiscal discipline and transparency, the PDP accused the EFCC of engaging in selective prosecution by ignoring “genuine corruption cases” involving ruling party members.
The statement urged anti-graft agencies to uphold their independence and resist political interference, while calling on party supporters and Sokoto residents to remain calm but firm in demanding true democracy and good governance.
“Our trust in Tambuwal’s integrity cannot be shaken by politically motivated probes,” the PDP declared.
