A coalition of former members of the House of Representatives, under the banner of House To the Rescue (HTR), has called for the immediate resignation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over what it described as the “unprecedented” deterioration of security across Nigeria.

The demand was contained in a strongly worded statement jointly signed on Wednesday by the group’s six zonal coordinators: Hon. Muhammed Musa Soba (North West), Hon. Zakari Mohammed (North Central), Hon. Olasupo Abiodun (South West), Hon. Sadiq Ibrahim (North East), Hon. Uko Nkole (South East), and Hon. Bassey Eko Ewa (South South).

“The continued deterioration of security across Nigeria has reached an intolerable and unforgivable threshold,” the group said. “Under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s watch, Nigerians have been subjected to unprecedented levels of killings, kidnappings, mass displacement, and unchecked terror by non-state armed groups.”

The group accused the federal government of failing in its most fundamental responsibility—protecting the lives and property of its citizens. Citing data from civil society and security monitoring organizations, HTR described the situation as a “grim and damning indictment” of the Tinubu administration.

They noted that over 10,000 Nigerians have been killed by terrorists, bandits, insurgents, and other armed groups since the President assumed office. In 2023 alone, 3,841 deaths were recorded, while 6,549 Nigerians were killed between May 2024 and May 2025.

Kidnapping, they said, has become a “national criminal industry,” with 4,243 cases reported in 2023, 2,691 in Tinubu’s first year, and 3,804 more reported between May 2024 and May 2025.

The group further highlighted reports by Amnesty International showing that 638 villages have been sacked in Zamfara State, while 725 more remain under the control or influence of bandits.

“These figures are not just statistics; they represent shattered lives, destroyed communities, and a nation bleeding without relief,” the statement added.

They condemned recent tragic incidents, including the abduction of 25 schoolgirls in Kebbi State, the killing of the school’s Vice Principal and staff members, and the murder of Brigadier General U.A. Uba by ISWAP, describing them as painful evidence of a government that has “lost control.”

Despite the mounting tragedies, the group accused the administration of being insensitive. They criticized Vice President Kashim Shettima for celebrating political defections amid national mourning, calling it “insensitive, irresponsible, and deeply shameful.”

Given what they described as leadership failure and national suffering, the former lawmakers said President Tinubu has lost the “moral, ethical, and constitutional legitimacy” to continue in office.

They outlined three key demands:

1. Immediate resignation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

2. Immediate suspension of all federal capital projects, with resources redirected to security operations, rescue efforts, and rebuilding devastated communities.

3. Implementation of a national security emergency plan led by competent professionals rather than politicians.

“Nigeria cannot continue on this path of bloodshed, impunity, and national collapse,” the group warned. “The Nigerian people deserve leadership that values their lives and responds to their suffering. The time for excuses is over. The time for accountability is now.”
