ASUU Declares Indefinite Nationwide Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared an indefinite nationwide strike, citing the Federal Government’s failure to pay June 2025 salaries and the worsening financial hardship faced by university lecturers across the country.

The industrial action, which took effect immediately, is already being enforced in various universities, including the University of Jos and the University of Abuja, where academic activities and meetings have been suspended.

ASUU’s decision stems from a resolution by its National Executive Council (NEC), which mandates union branches to withdraw services if monthly salaries are not paid within the first three days of a new month. The move enforces ASUU’s long-standing “No Pay, No Work” policy.

Confirming the development, ASUU National President, Professor Chris Piwuna, described the strike as unavoidable, blaming the persistent delays in salary payments and the financial difficulties endured by members. He pointed out that the recent transition from the Integrated Personnel Payroll and Information System (IPPIS) to the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS) has further compounded the issue.

“There is no technical problem with the new payment platform,” Piwuna said. “The delays appear to be a deliberate act by certain government officials. Despite meetings with the Minister of Education and the Accountant General, no solution has been provided.”

The union also raised concerns about the Federal Government’s failure to release the outstanding N10 billion from the N50 billion allocated for Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), warning that continued inaction could lead to a broader phase of industrial unrest.

At the University of Jos, the ASUU branch chairman, Dr. Jurbe Molwus, confirmed that the local congress had voted to suspend all academic duties in line with the NEC directive. A strike monitoring team has been deployed to ensure compliance among members.

Similarly, academic staff at the University of Abuja have also halted work, joining the nationwide protest against the government’s handling of university staff welfare.

ASUU maintained that the only way to resolve the current disruption is for the Federal Government to fulfil its obligations, particularly by ending salary delays and addressing unresolved financial commitments.
