It’s Now Clear That Wike is Working for APC, He Can’t Stop Our Convention” — PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has vowed to go ahead with its planned national convention in Oyo State despite opposition from the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

The convention, scheduled for September 15–16, 2025, is already generating controversy, with Wike reportedly at odds with Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, under whose administration the event will be hosted.

Party insiders say Wike’s resistance stems from his ongoing feud with Makinde and his growing disagreements with the PDP leadership. The development has once again exposed deep divisions within the party, despite repeated claims that its internal crisis was being resolved.

Speaking to the BBC, PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Malam Ibrahim Abdullahi, said the party had tolerated Wike for too long.

“We tried to avoid problems, but now it appears the problem is chasing us, because Wike thrives on confrontation,” Abdullahi said.

He added that Wike, if truly loyal to the PDP, should abide by its rules and collective decisions.

“Whatever step he takes to frustrate our forthcoming convention, we are ready to respond. Some of his actions already show he is more inclined towards promoting the APC government,” he stated.

Wike, however, has dismissed the planned convention, insisting that he neither recognizes it nor its outcome. He argued that the PDP has failed to address lingering disputes, describing the Oyo gathering as an attempt by “a few individuals” to hijack the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC).

He vowed, alongside his loyalists, to resist what he called “PDP’s internal injustice.”

Political observers have long described Wike as a disruptive force within the PDP, often clashing with its leadership and undermining party consensus.

At a recent meeting of PDP leaders from the South, held in Lagos on Thursday, August 21, 2025, the party restated its commitment to proceed with the Oyo convention. The meeting, chaired by PDP Board of Trustees Chairman, Adolphus Wabara, was attended by governors from Bayelsa, Enugu, and Osun states, alongside 12 federal lawmakers and other stakeholders.

Governor Makinde, who will host the convention, declared that Wike had overstepped his limits.

“No one, not even Wike, can stop us from holding our national convention as scheduled,” Makinde said firmly.

With the date drawing closer, the standoff between Wike and PDP leadership threatens to reignite tensions in the party, raising questions over its unity ahead of future elections.
