Instead of Addressing Bandits Attacks, Kwara Governor Blames Peter Obi, Accuses Him of Spreading Fake News
The Kwara State Government has dismissed reports suggesting that nine local government areas in the state are under siege by bandits, accusing Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, of spreading what it described as “false and reckless claims.”
In a statement issued on Monday by the Commissioner for Communications, Mrs. Bolanle Olukoju, the government said no part of the state is under the control of bandits, adding that such reports were capable of creating unnecessary panic among residents.

“We wish to alert the public to some reckless claims that nine local government areas of Kwara State are under siege by bandits. This is totally false. No local government area is under siege in the state,” Olukoju stated.
She described the reports as “fake news” allegedly being promoted by opposition figures both within and outside the state, accusing them of trying to discredit the government and create fear among citizens.
“The unfortunate challenges we have had in a few areas do not warrant the wicked escalation and fake news being promoted by opposition elements. We have reasonable grounds to suspect that these elements are the online promoters and equivalents of bandits, as they help to instill fear in the populace through fake news,” the statement continued.

Olukoju specifically called out Peter Obi, accusing him of using his social media handles to circulate unverified information about insecurity in the state.
“We regretfully observe that Mr. Peter Obi has lent his social media handles to spreading such fake news. This is not expected from him as a statesman. We request Mr. Peter Obi to bring down the post as it is totally false and inappropriate,” she said.
The Commissioner urged residents to desist from sharing unverified information, warning that doing so could undermine the efforts of security agencies and heighten public anxiety.

“This irresponsible behaviour is making things harder for the security forces who already have enough on their plates. We appeal to everyone to rely on verified government sources for information,” she added.
The statement comes amid growing concerns over insecurity in parts of Nigeria, with reports of bandit attacks, kidnappings, and killings continuing to make headlines in several states. However, the Kwara State government insists that the situation within its borders remains under control.
