Influential Kwankwaso Ally Resigns from NDC, Backs Tinubu for 2027

A long-time ally of former Kano State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) vice-presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso, Kabiru Adamu Abdullahi, has resigned from the party and defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Abdullahi, who has been associated with the Kwankwasiyya political movement for nearly three decades, announced his resignation in a letter addressed to the chairman of the NDC in Kofar Ruwa Ward, Dala Local Government Area of Kano State.

Explaining his decision, the politician cited what he described as years of unfulfilled promises and a lack of political recognition despite his long-standing association with Kwankwaso.

“I have been with Kwankwaso for 29 years but have only benefited from failed promises. I will go to where I will be respected more,” Abdullahi said.

He expressed appreciation to the NDC for the opportunity to serve but stated that his resignation would take immediate effect.

Abdullahi subsequently declared his support for President Bola Tinubu and the APC ahead of the 2027 general election.

His defection comes months after he publicly defended Kwankwaso during a political controversy in Kano State.

According to Daily Trust, Abdullahi had earlier sworn on the Qur’an while insisting that Kwankwaso did not direct Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to defect to the APC.

His latest move marks a significant political shift for a figure who has remained closely associated with the Kwankwasiyya movement for almost 30 years.

The defection is also coming at a time of heightened political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with politicians across Nigeria reassessing their alliances and political platforms.
