The defectors were received by Senator Liyel Imoke, former Cross River State Governor and Senator Gershom Bassey, who represents Cross River South.

A town hall meeting was convened in the state’s Akamkpa and Biase local government areas where the defectors, who were being led by Comrade Godwin Urom Ibe, a well-liked politician in the region, were welcomed.

Speaking while receiving Urom Ibe and his supporters, Senator Imoke implored Cross River people to shun the ruling APC because, according to him, the party had failed on all sides and therefore unworthy to be entrusted with power again at the federal and state levels.

He also warned against ethnic sentiments and voting for the Labour Party and other mushroom parties, adding “such votes would obviously be wasted and would amount to conferring advantage on the rudderless APC and reinforcing failure.”

In his remarks, Sen Bassey said as a representative of the people, he had seen it all in terms of the negative change the APC had brought upon the country and its citizens in the last eight years running.

He said the recent National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) release has shown the nakedness of the APC government and called on all Nigerians to vote the party out for gross incompetence.

“The NBS release indicates that 133 million Nigerians are multi-dimensionally poor while 63 per cent of Nigerians were poor by reason of lack of access to healthcare, education, good living standards, employment and security. Voting PDP will right those wrongs and restore Nigeria’s lost glory, “he stated.

Senator Bassey said because the APC government at the national level has failed as indicated in the hardship Nigerians were passing through and the huge debt that runs into trillion of dollars, the administration has resorted to taxing the people on everything in order to meet up with their cost of running government.
