Ikom Council Chairman Commences Road Maintenance as “Sweet Mother Street” Gets a Facelift
Commuters and residents in Ikom are beginning to breathe a sigh of relief as critical road maintenance projects spearheaded by the Ikom Local Government Council are now in full swing.
Under the directive of the Council Chairman, Hon. Pst. (Mrs.) Mercy Nsor, major palliative repairs have commenced across several streets in the Ikom metropolis, with Sweet Mother Street being one of the first beneficiaries.

Previously known for its poor condition—particularly during the rainy season—Sweet Mother Street and its adjoining roads had become nearly impassable, stalling businesses and frustrating movement. However, the ongoing maintenance work has already begun to transform the area, providing immediate relief and improved accessibility for residents and business owners alike.
During an inspection tour, Chairman Nsor emphasized the urgency of the repairs. “The Executive Governor of our State, His Excellency, Apostle Sen. (Prince) Bassey Edet Otu has already awarded some of these roads for immediate rehabilitation,” she said. “But my administration decided to attend to the roads pending when the contractors would move to site. We needed to give succor to our people, especially as the said road has become impassable, making it difficult for businesses located around that area to thrive.”
The Council’s Works Department, led by Supervisor Mr. Ogar Ogar Enagu and Director Mr. Stanley, confirmed that swift palliative actions are being taken across various inland roads. They noted that early intervention is crucial before the onset of heavy rains, and that drainage systems are being marked out for construction to ensure proper water flow and prevent future damage.

Local residents have lauded the efforts, expressing gratitude for what they describe as a long-overdue intervention. “The road used to be very bad, especially during the rainy season,” one commercial motorcycle rider shared. “Our hopes are being restored thanks to the Chairman and her team. You couldn’t use this road before without facing serious damage.”
In addition to road repairs, Chairman Nsor revealed that other infrastructural projects are underway. These include the installation of street lights and the construction of an ultra-modern staff toilet facility at the Council Secretariat. She reiterated her administration’s commitment to transforming Ikom through meaningful development projects.
“The well-being and ease of our people remain my top priority,” Nsor said. “We will not relent in ensuring Ikom wears a new look.”
