I will serve one term and return power to North in 2031 — Peter Obi
Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has declared that he would serve only one term as President if elected in 2027, pledging to return power to Northern Nigeria by 2031 in line with the country’s zoning arrangement.
Obi made the announcement during a widely-followed discussion on X Spaces (formerly Twitter Spaces) on Sunday night, reaffirming his long-held stance on fairness, equity, and national cohesion.

“If I’m given the mandate, I will serve only one term of four years,” Obi stated. “After that, power should return to the North in 2031. It’s about building a balanced and united Nigeria.”
The former vice-presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2019 and flag bearer of the Labour Party in the 2023 presidential election has increasingly signaled interest in another run, particularly under a proposed coalition expected to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the PDP in 2027.
Although Obi appeared confident about emerging as the consensus candidate of the coalition, he did not comment on what his position would be if he failed to clinch the ticket.
