How Power Tussle Over Enugu APC Structure Linked to Minister Uche Nnaji’s Resignation

Fresh details have emerged linking the resignation of the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Uche Nnaji, to an intense struggle for control of the All Progressives Congress (APC) structure in Enugu State between him and Governor Peter Mbah.

According to reports, the political tussle began when speculations surfaced that Governor Mbah, who is currently a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was making moves to join the APC.

The development allegedly triggered a fierce battle between Nnaji and Mbah over who would control the party structure once the governor officially defects.

Reports claimed that Nnaji had been determined to retain his influence within the Enugu APC, seeing himself as the leader of the party in the state. However, his grip reportedly weakened following internal power realignments, which saw many party stakeholders shifting allegiance in anticipation of Mbah’s arrival.

Meanwhile, Nnaji’s resignation has been officially confirmed by the Presidency. Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, in a statement released late Tuesday, said President Bola Tinubu accepted the minister’s resignation following controversies surrounding his academic credentials.

Nnaji’s exit came after investigations revealed inconsistencies in his educational background. The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), reportedly disowned the Bachelor of Science degree certificate he claimed to have obtained from the institution.

According to UNN Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Simon U. Ortuanya, Nnaji was admitted to the university in 1981 but failed to complete his programme, and therefore, no certificate was issued to him.

Further findings also indicated that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) denied issuing the discharge certificate presented by Nnaji, describing it as fake.

With his resignation and the alleged loss of his political base, observers say Governor Peter Mbah’s potential entry into the APC could reshape the party’s power dynamics in Enugu State, setting the stage for a new wave of political realignment ahead of future elections.
