Tensions flared in Calabar on Friday as gunshots were reportedly fired by police officers following the alleged destruction of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s campaign banners and the disruption of a high-profile Federal Government project commissioning.

Eyewitnesses claim that hoodlums, allegedly acting on the orders of the Calabar South Local Government Chairman, stormed the project sites early Friday morning. The group reportedly pulled down banners bearing President Tinubu’s image, vandalized canopies and a stage set up for the event, and halted preparations for the official commissioning of projects executed by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
The projects, which include critical infrastructure works on Idang Street and Nyahasang Street, span both Calabar South and Calabar Municipal local government areas. They were scheduled to be formally commissioned later in the day.
While unconfirmed reports suggest the Governor may have instructed the disruption, News Week Nigeria has not been able to independently verify these allegations.

Repeated attempts to contact the Governor’s Special Assistant on New Media, Andrea Ekeng, were unsuccessful, as calls went unanswered.
The backdrop to Friday’s incident is a simmering political feud between the Governor and Senator Ekpenyong, which appears to be escalating.
