The much-anticipated knock-out stage of the 2024 Governor’s Cup was officially launched on Tuesday at the Ikom Township Stadium, with the Executive Chairman of Ikom Local Government Area, Hon. Pastor (Mrs.) Mercy Nsor, performing the ceremonial kick-off.

Speaking at the event, Hon. Nsor lauded the efforts of Cross River State Governor, Apostle Senator (Prince) Bassey Edet Otu, for prioritizing sports development as a tool for fostering peace, unity, and youth engagement.
“Sports, especially football, transcend the playing field, offering social, economic, and cultural benefits,” she said. “This competition creates a bond among sister LGAs while promoting the governor’s vision of peace and harmony across the state.”
Hon. Nsor highlighted her administration’s commitment to reviving sports in Ikom, citing the revitalization of the local Ekabokon Football Club as a testament to her dedication. She also praised the decision to host inter-LGA matches, emphasizing the unity it has fostered among communities.
In addition to providing financial and material support for the event, the chairman assured the organizers of continued peace and security during their stay in Ikom. Her remarks underscored the role of sports in empowering young people and building community ties.
The Governor’s Cup, a state-wide football competition, has been hailed as a unifying platform for showcasing talent and promoting inter-LGA relationships. The next stage of the tournament promises more exciting fixtures as teams battle for the prestigious title.
