The Court of Appeal has today nullified the earlier judgment issued by the Federal High Court, which had ruled against the conduct of the Rivers State Local Government Area (LGA) elections, marking a significant victory for the opposition parties in the state.

 

The ruling, handed down by the appellate court, is a sharp rebuke to the lower court’s decision, which had been seen as controversial and supportive of the interests of the pro-Wike faction in Rivers State. The Appeal Court judges stated that the Federal High Court had erred in its interpretation of the law and its handling of the case, thereby overturning the decision.

 

In response to the landmark ruling, the spokesperson of the opposition coalition in Rivers State, Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, hailed the judgment as a triumph for democracy, declaring that it represents a major step towards restoring public confidence in the judiciary.

 

“This is a victory not just for the people of Rivers State, but for the entire nation. It is a clear affirmation that the judiciary can still stand firm against political manipulation. The judgment today has redeemed the image of the judiciary, which had been nearly destroyed by the undue influence of the pro-Wike group,” Ugochinyere stated in a press briefing following the court ruling.

 

The legal battle centered around the controversial conduct of the local government elections in Rivers State, which had been marred by allegations of voter suppression, irregularities, and violence. While the Rivers State government and its allies had defended the electoral process, claiming it was fair and legitimate, opposition groups have consistently argued that the elections were tainted by fraud and political interference.

 

The opposition coalition, led by Ugochinyere, had filed the appeal against the initial ruling, which they claimed had failed to address serious concerns regarding the transparency and fairness of the elections.
