Flood Disaster in Cross River: Nta/Nselle Residents Cry Out for Urgent Intervention as Farmlands, Homes Destroyed
Residents of the Nta/Nselle community in Ikom Local Government Area of Cross River State have made a passionate appeal to the federal, state, and local authorities for urgent intervention following a devastating flood that has wreaked havoc across the region.
The flood, described by locals as “unprecedented,” has swept through the agricultural community, destroying farmlands, submerging homes, and displacing hundreds of families.

Crops cultivated over months of hard labor have been washed away, leaving the predominantly agrarian population in dire straits and on the brink of a food crisis.
In an open letter addressed to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Cross River State Emergency Management Agency (CREMA), and the Ikom Local Government Emergency Management Agency (ILGEMA), the affected residents, under the banner of Nta Land in Bakor, pleaded for swift action to alleviate their suffering.
“Our communities are currently grappling with the devastating aftermath of recent, unprecedented floods that have swept through our villages, leaving a trail of utter despair and helplessness,” said Kingsley Agbor, a community representative.

He described the extent of the damage as catastrophic, noting that the floods have “completely decimated” farmlands, destroyed homes, and stripped residents of their livelihoods. The situation, he stressed, is beyond the capacity of the community to handle alone.
The residents are urgently calling for emergency humanitarian support, including food, clean drinking water, temporary shelters, medical supplies, and essential non-food items. They are also appealing for long-term recovery plans, such as support for farm regeneration and housing reconstruction.
“We implore you, with the deepest urgency, to dispatch rapid assessment teams to Nta Land,” the letter reads. “Let us not allow this tragedy to silence the vibrant spirit of our community.”

The community has also expressed concern for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and displaced families, warning that without immediate support, the situation could escalate into a full-blown humanitarian crisis.
As of press time, neither NEMA nor state and local emergency agencies had issued an official response.
