ADC Begins Takeover of APC Stronghold in Northern Nigeria as Senators, Buhari’s Minister Join Coalition

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has made a significant political breakthrough in Northern Nigeria as it continues its steady inroads into strongholds previously dominated by the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a major boost to its growing influence, the ADC has welcomed two serving senators — Senator Onawo and Senator Adokwe — as well as a former Minister of Environment under President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, Barrister Mohammed, into its fold.

The high-profile defections were confirmed over the weekend during a well-attended political gathering in Nasarawa State, a region long considered a bastion of APC support.

The development is being seen as a sign of shifting political tides in the North, particularly ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to party insiders, the defectors cited disillusionment with the APC’s leadership and a renewed belief in ADC’s people-driven agenda as key reasons for their decision to switch allegiance. The trio’s entry into the ADC is expected to energize the party’s base and attract more political heavyweights seeking an alternative platform.

Speaking at the event, Senator Onawo described the ADC as “a party with a fresh vision for Nigeria,” while Senator Adokwe emphasized the importance of aligning with a movement that truly represents the aspirations of the common people. Barr. Mohammed echoed their sentiments, calling on other patriotic Nigerians to join hands in building “a credible and inclusive political future.”
