A delegation of the Eastern Union (EU), Sokoto State chapter, has paid a solidarity visit to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, at the Sokoto State Correctional Centre, in a move that has drawn attention to ongoing calls for unity, dialogue and improved welfare for the Igbo people across Nigeria.

The visit, which took place on December 20, was led by the Sokoto State Coordinator of the Eastern Union, Elder Comrade Godwin Egwu, alongside the State Woman Leader, Mrs. Ijeoma Emebo. They were joined by 13 other members of the state chapter, making the delegation a total of 15 representatives of the socio-cultural organisation.

According to a statement issued after the visit and signed by the National President of the Eastern Union, Hon. Charles Anike, the delegation was warmly received by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu despite the constraints of the correctional facility. The IPOB leader was said to have expressed deep appreciation for the visit, describing it as a significant morale booster at a time when solidarity from various groups remains crucial.

The statement noted that Kanu was particularly moved by a letter of encouragement and solidarity personally delivered to him by the delegation on behalf of the Eastern Union’s national leadership. The letter, signed by Hon. Anike, conveyed the organisation’s support, prayers and commitment to the peaceful pursuit of good governance, justice and improved living conditions for Ndigbo both within Nigeria and in the diaspora.

“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu was visibly delighted after reading through the letter from the National President,” the statement said. “He expressed joy over the existence of an organisation like the Eastern Union and commended its members for their courage, unity and dedication to the welfare of the Igbo people.”

The IPOB leader reportedly went a step further by openly declaring his intention to identify with the Eastern Union, praising its vision and objectives. During the interaction, Kanu was said to have prayed for members of the Eastern Union, urging them to remain steadfast and courageous in the face of challenges. He encouraged the delegation not to relent in advocating for good governance, equity and a better life for Igbo people across Nigeria, stressing that perseverance and faith were essential ingredients in the struggle for justice and fairness.

“He advised us to stay strong and not be discouraged by setbacks,” one member of the delegation said. “He emphasized that meaningful change often takes time, but collective effort and commitment to peaceful engagement can yield positive results.”

As part of the visit, the delegation presented Mazi Nnamdi Kanu with the official insignia of the Eastern Union, a symbolic gesture signifying solidarity and shared aspirations. Kanu reportedly received the insignia with gratitude, expressing strong faith in God and optimism that a better future awaits the Igbo people and Nigeria as a whole.

The statement further disclosed that Kanu used the opportunity to appreciate members of the Eastern Union across the country and in the diaspora for their prayers, moral support and continued advocacy. He acknowledged that such gestures of unity and concern have helped sustain his hope and resolve during his period of detention.

The Eastern Union, a socio-cultural organisation with chapters in several states and abroad, has consistently positioned itself as a platform for promoting unity, development and constructive engagement among the Igbo people. Its leadership has often emphasized non-violent advocacy, dialogue and participation in democratic processes as pathways to addressing grievances and advancing collective interests.

Speaking after the visit, leaders of the Sokoto State chapter of the EU described the engagement as peaceful, emotional and inspiring. They noted that despite his circumstances, Kanu remained composed and focused on broader issues affecting Ndigbo and the nation at large.

“The visit reaffirmed our belief in unity and collective responsibility,” Elder Comrade Godwin Egwu said. “It was important for us to show that our leaders and brothers are not forgotten, regardless of where they are. Our message was one of hope, encouragement and commitment to a better future.”

Mrs. Ijeoma Emebo, the State Woman Leader, also highlighted the significance of women’s involvement in advocacy and solidarity efforts. She said the visit underscored the role of Igbo women in promoting peace, unity and resilience within their communities.

Political analysts and observers note that visits such as this reflect ongoing efforts by various Igbo groups to maintain engagement with issues surrounding Kanu’s detention while emphasizing peaceful support rather than confrontation. They argue that such initiatives could help reduce tensions and create room for dialogue on broader national questions relating to inclusion, justice and governance.

While the visit does not alter the legal processes surrounding Kanu’s case, it adds to the growing list of solidarity gestures from socio-cultural organisations, religious groups and individuals who continue to call for fairness, dialogue and reconciliation.

As the Eastern Union delegation departed the correctional centre, members said they left with renewed determination to pursue the organisation’s objectives and to continue advocating for unity, good governance and the well-being of Ndigbo wherever they may be.

The EU leadership reiterated its commitment to peaceful engagement and constructive advocacy, urging its members nationwide and in the diaspora to remain law-abiding, prayerful and focused on long-term goals. According to the statement, the organisation believes that sustained unity and dialogue remain essential in navigating Nigeria’s complex socio-political landscape and securing a better tomorrow for all.
