Emirs Asked to Intervene as ADC Sweeps PDP Structures Across Key States in Northern Nigeria

Atiku reportedly under pressure to remain in PDP amid rising defections to ADC

Some prominent individuals are reportedly appealing to Northern Emirs to intervene and persuade former Vice President Atiku Abubakar not to dump the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), amid a wave of defections to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

This revelation was made public by Demola Olarewaju, Special Assistant on Digital Media Strategy to Atiku Abubakar.

In a post shared on social media, Olarewaju said:

His remarks come in the wake of the ADC’s aggressive push across the country, where it has reportedly taken over PDP’s political structures in at least eight states: Anambra, Gombe, Jigawa, Benue, Borno, Nasarawa, Yobe, and Adamawa.

The most dramatic of these shifts occurred in Benue State, where the ADC recently assumed control of the PDP Secretariat, signaling what many political analysts are calling a “political earthquake.” The move highlights the growing traction of a new coalition aligned with ADC, spearheaded by influential political figures including ex-Senate President David Mark and Atiku Abubakar himself.

David Mark’s resignation from the PDP on June 27, citing “deepening divisions” and an “unresolved leadership crisis,” marked the beginning of a notable exodus from the party. The defection of Mark — a long-time PDP stalwart — appears to have emboldened other party heavyweights, with insiders hinting that prominent figures such as former governors Liyel Imoke, Babangida Aliyu, Gabriel Suswam, Sam Egwu, Aminu Tambuwal, and Sule Lamido may soon follow suit.

In Benue, where PDP once held considerable sway, the party’s support base has historically been dogged by internal divisions. The recent handover of its political machinery to ADC operatives is now being seen as a culmination of years of unresolved infighting.

Political observers note that the latest developments underscore a broader collapse of PDP’s national influence, as the party struggles to unify its ranks and hold ground ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Meanwhile, the attempt to enlist traditional rulers to dissuade Atiku from quitting the PDP signals rising desperation within the party’s top hierarchy. However, sources close to Atiku suggest he remains undecided, carefully weighing his options as the new ADC coalition gains momentum.

For now, the PDP faces one of its gravest existential threats yet, as the once-dominant opposition party appears to be hemorrhaging both leaders and supporters to a rising third force.
