‘EFCC Has Powers to Freeze Any Account Under Investigation’ — Intl Human Rights Envoy, Ambassador Charles

The Special Envoy to West Africa for the International Protection Service, Ambassador Charles Omini, has defended the powers of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to freeze bank accounts linked to suspected financial crimes.

Omini, while reacting to recent calls for the resignation of the EFCC chairman, described such demands as unnecessary and urged Nigerians to respect the rule of law.

He said the anti-graft agency has the legal authority to freeze accounts found to be connected to ongoing investigations, stressing that no individual is above the law.

According to him, Nigerians should understand that actions taken by the EFCC in the course of its investigations are part of efforts to combat financial crimes and corruption in the country.

“The EFCC has the powers to freeze any account that is found wanting for investigation,” Omini said.

The Special Envoy called on Nigerians to remain law-abiding and support the EFCC in its efforts to tackle corruption, financial crimes and other forms of economic wrongdoing.

He also urged citizens to allow relevant authorities to carry out their statutory responsibilities without unnecessary interference.

Omini maintained that strengthening institutions responsible for fighting corruption remains important to the development of the country, adding that Nigerians should cooperate with lawful investigations.
