EFCC Contradicts Itself, Says Man Who Killed Colleague in Anambra Was Involved in “Coding and Online Medical Supplier”
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has released a detailed account of events surrounding the killing of one of its officers, Assistant Superintendent of EFCC II (ASE II) Aminu Sahabi Salisu, during an operation in Awka, Anambra State, on January 17, 2025.

The Commission alleges the perpetrator, identified as Dr. Joshua Chukwubueze Ikechukwu, is a suspected internet fraudster and has labeled the narratives circulating on social media as “irresponsible” and “inhuman.”
Salisu, alongside other EFCC investigators, had gone to arrest suspected internet fraudsters at Dr. J.O. Ukwutinife Close in Ifite, Awka. The operation initially went smoothly, with 37 suspects arrested in the premises. However, trouble began when Ikechukwu, who had monitored the agents via CCTV, refused to open his door despite repeated requests. He then allegedly fired at the EFCC officers, killing Salisu and wounding another investigator.
Contradictory Claims

While condemning social media narratives attempting to rationalize the crime, the EFCC’s official statement has raised eyebrows. In its description of Ikechukwu’s activities, the Commission said the suspect was involved in “coding and online medical supplies of doubtful legitimacy.” The ambiguity of these claims has led to further public scrutiny, with many questioning the basis for the EFCC’s allegations.
The Commission disclosed that two laptops, iPads, and several recording devices were recovered from Ikechukwu’s apartment, asserting that his involvement in internet fraud has already been “established.” However, critics argue that linking coding and medical supplies to internet fraud leaves room for interpretation, especially given Ikechukwu’s background as a medical professional.

In its statement, the EFCC warned that internet fraudsters are increasingly resorting to violence, alleging they are now involved in crimes such as kidnapping, banditry, and ritual killings. “The public should not fold its arms or allow itself to be deceived that they are mere ‘Yahoo boys and girls,’” the statement read.
The Commission vowed to respond decisively to any further attacks on its officers, reiterating its commitment to eradicating internet fraud and corruption.

As the EFCC mourns the loss of Salisu, it has called for respect and sensitivity toward the grieving family and colleagues of the slain officer. “The milk of human kindness demands that a grieving family, Commission, and nation should be spared the shenanigans of false narratives,” the EFCC stated.
The suspect, Ikechukwu, is currently in police custody and is expected to face trial for the killing. Meanwhile, the EFCC has expressed gratitude for the support it has received from sister agencies and individuals in the wake of the tragedy.
