One Beheaded as Communal War Breaks Out in Cross River Central

A fresh wave of communal violence has erupted between the Isobendeghe and Boje communities in the Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State, resulting in at least one reported beheading and sparking widespread panic and condemnation across the region.

The alarming development was first brought to public attention by veteran journalist George Odok Jnr, who sounded the alarm on social media early Monday morning. “It is quite disturbing to hear that Isobendeghe and Boje communities in Boki LGA, CRS, have renewed their hostility with some people allegedly killed. The State government and security agents should kindly intervene,” Odok posted.

While official casualty figures remain unverified, multiple local sources report that tensions flared into violence over the weekend, leading to fatalities and forcing dozens of residents to flee for safety. Eyewitnesses have described a grim scene of panic, displacement, and fear, as sporadic clashes erupted between the neighboring communities.

The renewed conflict, believed to stem from a long-standing boundary dispute, has drawn sharp reactions from citizens and civil society alike. “This is worrisome. Their hostility is age-long. Something has to be done to permanently address the issues,” commented one concerned resident online.

According to reports, Monday had originally been earmarked for a peaceful government intervention aimed at resolving the historical land disagreement between the two communities. However, the day intended for reconciliation instead witnessed a gruesome escalation in violence. “Imagine—a day meant for peace turning into a day of renewed bloodshed,” lamented another community member.

The violence is already affecting economic life in the area. Local businesses have shut down, and residents fear that sustained unrest could drive away investors and deepen poverty in a region already facing development challenges. “Business activity has been on the high in both communities. With these attacks, people will now be afraid to visit or invest,” a local businessman said.

Beyond the economic toll, the conflict threatens cultural ties that once bound the communities. “These are communities that have shared intermarriage, mutual love, and history. War should not be an option,” said another voice from the region.

Adding to the concern, some residents pointed out that military personnel were reportedly already stationed in parts of the area prior to the violence. Their presence, however, did not prevent the outbreak. “So sad, even with the presence of military personnel at Onitsha farm? Who brought them? And for what exactly?” one user questioned.

Online platforms have since been flooded with appeals for peace and calls for a more effective and lasting government response. “The world is thinking Hi-Tech, AI, space travel—and we’re thinking of chopping off people’s heads for land. Baba God, our hearts are truly wicked,” read one viral post.

Despite public outrage and calls for immediate action, both the Cross River State Government and security agencies have yet to issue an official statement on the incident. Meanwhile, digital momentum continues to build, with citizens demanding that the government move beyond temporary deployments and instead launch a comprehensive and sustainable peace initiative.

“This bloodshed must stop,” a resident posted. “We need long-term engagement, not just soldiers after the fact.”
