Senate President Godswill Akpabio has voiced significant concern regarding the growing complexities of Nigeria’s national security challenges, describing the situation as a pressing issue for the stability and core of the nation.
Speaking at the 2024 Defence Advisers and Attachés Conference in Abuja, Akpabio emphasized the need for proactive strategies and advanced technologies in tackling these evolving threats.
Akpabio, represented by Defence Minister Badaru Abubakar, addressed the gathering, highlighting the critical role of intelligence in equipping leaders to protect citizens and uphold national interests. “
“We have witnessed events that challenge the stability and core of our nationhood,” he remarked.
He called on Defence Attachés, Advisers, and Officers responsible for state security to adopt proactive measures, leveraging their experience to anticipate threats and gauge their impact on Nigeria.
Underscoring the importance of technology, Akpabio stressed that effective defense strategies must incorporate technological advancements in ways that align with ethical standards and international law.
He urged security forces to consider the role of tech-driven solutions as an integral part of defense planning and operations.
Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle, also spoke at the event, emphasizing the need to adapt intelligence practices amid a rapidly changing security landscape.
He outlined plans to integrate artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and human analytics into intelligence operations to better address emerging security threats. “These innovations help process vast data and uncover patterns critical to addressing emerging security threats,” he stated.
Matawalle further reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which focuses on job creation, inclusivity, and poverty alleviation. He highlighted that these efforts would contribute to a safer and more prosperous Nigeria.
The Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major General Akomaye Parker Undiandeye, praised the Armed Forces for their achievements in countering terrorism, kidnapping, cybercrime, and vandalism. He acknowledged the ongoing challenges posed by regional instability, climate change, and geopolitical tensions, noting that these factors amplify the need for accurate intelligence to support Nigeria’s security objectives.
“Our task is to provide accurate intelligence to support Nigeria’s security objectives, knowing that today’s threats do not define our future,” said Undiandeye. He urged Defence Advisers and Attachés to harness insights from their areas of operation to reinforce Nigeria’s security posture.
The conference, themed “Exploring the Role of Technology in Strengthening National and Regional Security,” focused on the role of advanced technologies in bolstering national and regional security. As the event concluded, Undiandeye expressed confidence that it would enhance attendees’ abilities to identify and facilitate the acquisition of critical technologies essential for Nigeria’s national security and defense.
