Cross River Government Declares War on Illegal Mining, Urges Collective Action to Save State’s Future

The Cross River State Government has issued a strong call to action against illegal mining activities that continue to threaten the state’s environment, economy, and future.
Speaking on behalf of the government, Comrade Joseph Ekamoti Agbor, Special Adviser to the Governor on Solid Minerals, described the unchecked operations of illegal miners as a growing menace that must be urgently addressed.

In a press release titled “Saying No to Illegal Mining: A Call to Protect Cross River’s Land and Future,” Agbor implored citizens, traditional rulers, and stakeholders to rally together in defense of the state’s natural resources.
“Illegal mining, a shadow industry operating outside the bounds of law and regulation, is rapidly eroding our land, polluting our waters, and endangering lives,” the statement reads. “What should be a source of pride and progress has become, in many places, a cause for concern and devastation.”

The government expressed grave concern over the environmental degradation caused by illegal mining—citing deforestation, soil erosion, polluted rivers, and abandoned farmlands. It also warned of the economic losses tied to these illicit operations, which deprive the state of much-needed revenue and undermine prospects for legal, sustainable development.
Comrade Agbor emphasized that the damage goes beyond environmental destruction. “Illegal mining robs our people of jobs, steals from state revenue, and undermines the rule of law,” he said. “It puts lives at risk through unsafe practices, collapses, and the exploitation of vulnerable populations.”
In response, the government is encouraging citizens to report illegal mining operations and support responsible practices that respect both the law and the land. “Let us embrace legal, responsible, and sustainable mining practices that create lasting opportunities, not short-term destruction,” the statement urges.
The message concludes with a clear call to unity and action: “Say No to Illegal Mining. Protect Our Land. Preserve Our Future.”
This campaign comes at a time when resource-rich communities in Cross River are increasingly vulnerable to exploitation, and the government is determined to ensure that development does not come at the cost of environmental and human well-being.
