Concerns Over Cross River State Local Government Election Date Change: A Threat to Fairness and Transparency?

The sudden change in the Cross River State local government election date has raised concerns about fairness and transparency.

The ruling party through CROSIEC initially released a date that allowed for sufficient preparation time, only to change it abruptly, leaving many scrambling to adjust. This move has all the hallmarks of a tactical maneuver to outsmart the opposition.

Key concerns surrounding this decision include lack of transparency, unfair advantage, and undermining democracy. The sudden change in election date reeks of opacity, leaving many wondering about the motivations behind this decision. By changing the date abruptly, the ruling party may gain an unfair advantage, potentially disenfranchising opposition supporters. Such tactics undermine the very foundations of democracy, where fairness and equality are essential.

It’s crucial for electoral bodies to ensure that elections are conducted in a fair, transparent, and accountable manner. The Cross River State Independent electoral commission must address these concerns to maintain public trust and confidence in the electoral process.

Notably, the recent amendments to the electoral process, which reduced the time required to conduct elections from 90 days to 30 days, do not justify the abrupt change in the election date and the entire process that leads to the new date. The fact that the initial timetable was published whether officially or unofficially and adjusted within 12 hours raises concerns about the commission’s commitment to fairness and transparency.

In the interest of fairness and democracy, I urge the relevant authorities to reconsider this sudden change and ensure that all parties have adequate time to prepare for the local government elections. Only through fairness and transparency can we ensure the integrity of our democratic institutions.
