Cleric Predicts Major Oil and Gas Discoveries in Cross River, Others

Renowned cleric and spiritual leader, Primate Elijah Ayodele, has predicted a fresh wave of oil and gas discoveries in Nigeria, naming Lagos and Cross River States as the next big players in the country’s energy sector.

In a statement released early Thursday, Ayodele said Nigeria is on the verge of uncovering significant liquefied gas reserves in Lagos and new oil deposits in Cross River — finds he believes will reshape both states’ economies and boost national revenue.

“They are going to discover liquefied gas in Lagos State and another oil in Cross River,” Ayodele declared. “They will have more oil wells. This revelation will change the dynamics of these states and the nation’s economy.”

Lagos, long known as Nigeria’s commercial nerve centre, has in recent years expanded its footprint in offshore oil and gas production. Experts say a major gas discovery could solidify its role as a critical energy hub.

Cross River, on the other hand, has seen limited oil exploration over the years, with its economy still largely dependent on tourism and agriculture. A confirmed discovery could mark a turning point for the state.

Energy analyst Dr. Tunde Akinyemi of the African Centre for Energy Policy described the potential impact as “transformative,” but stressed the need for transparency and equitable benefit sharing.

“If new reserves are confirmed, they could expand Nigeria’s proven reserves and open fresh revenue streams,” Akinyemi said. “The real challenge is in managing these resources so that local communities benefit.”

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has not yet responded to Ayodele’s prophecy, but officials have previously confirmed ongoing exploration efforts in several coastal states, including Lagos and Cross River.

Industry insiders say the prospect could attract substantial foreign investment. “If credible geological surveys back this up, we might see a surge in exploratory drilling,” a senior oil services executive said, noting growing international interest in African energy markets.

However, environmental groups have urged caution. Mrs. Funmi Adebanjo, coordinator of the Green Nigeria Network, warned against repeating the ecological damage seen in other oil-producing areas.

“Oil and gas bring opportunities, but without strict environmental safeguards, communities and ecosystems pay the price,” Adebanjo cautioned.

If Ayodele’s prediction proves true, Lagos and Cross River may soon find themselves at the centre of Nigeria’s next energy boom — and at the heart of the debate over how best to balance economic gains with environmental and social responsibility.
